  • Baltimore, MD

Job Description

The Baltimore Sun, a renowned and award-winning news organization, is seeking visually savvy page designers with good news judgment to help in revitalizing our print production team.

With new local owners committed to investing in journalism and building a sustainable business — with both the print edition and the eNewspaper as key parts of that vision — we’re seeking journalistic minded designers to help us grow.

Essential Functions

  • Design with news judgment: Design news, feature and sports pages that are visually engaging and emphasize the most important stories of the day.
  • Editorial collaboration: Work closely with topic editors to understand content priorities, reflect them appropriately in layout and apply feedback quickly and accurately.
  • Software utilization: The Sun is the first U.S. daily paper to use Protecmedia editorial software to design a print paper, using AI to create workflow efficiencies and to expand the eNewspaper to satisfy readers’ needs for more news. A candidate for this position should also be proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Content booking coordination: Plan content placement for both the print edition and the eNewspaper, ensuring a smooth workflow, accurate lineups and consistent visual storytelling across platforms, while making deadlines.
  • Proofing and revisions: Review proofs with a critical eye for editorial accuracy, visual clarity and overall balance. A top candidate should be able to improve the quality of display type while making grammar corrections on deadline.
  • Ad placement: Work with the advertising makeup department to coordinate ad placements in coordination with editorial print production.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design or a related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience in newspaper or editorial design (internships included), with evidence of strong news judgment in design samples or previous work.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Comfort working on deadline with shifting priorities — and the editorial intuition to adapt as news develops.
  • Ability to collaborate with editors while maintaining confidence in layout decisions based on journalistic value.
  • Familiarity with AP Style and newspaper production workflows.
  • Flexible schedule availability, including nights and weekends.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $65,000

Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors such as experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.

The Baltimore Sun is committed to building a diverse newsroom that reflects the people it covers and the audience it serves. Candidates are encouraged to highlight new perspectives they can bring to our team.
