PreBiotea
Onions are rich in dietary fibers such as fructans that includes inulin and fructooligosaccharides and possess prebiotic property. Prebiotics like inulin improve human gastrointestinal health by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of gut microbiota. Being a fructan, it is also a sweetener of low calorific value.
These prebiotics naturally extracted from onions can be added in regular drinks like tea. Tea is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, and its consumption has been claimed to be associated with beneficial health effects.
The team Acronions, comprised of Dr. Pragya Goyal, Assistant Professor, AIMSR (Team Leader), Dr. Pranoti Belapurkar, Prof. and Head, Dept of Biosciences, Dr. Seema Kelotra, Assistant Professor, AIMSR, Dr. Shivani Dubey, Sr. Assistant Professor, AIMSR & Dr. Arnav Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, AFMR (Team Members), are the national finalists in the Grand Onion Challege-2022 by Govt. of India. The team has also been felicitated by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Govt. of India.
AloeDerm
With increase in pollution, adulteration in food products and use of harmful chemicals in cosmetics, there is an increase in the no. of skin-related issues. It has created a strong need for a cost-effective product with sustained release of herbal medication without side effects. Dr. Shivani Dubey, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Biosciences, is working to propose solution for major skin-related concerns like wound healing and burns, allergies such as eczema, psoriasis and beauty problems like skin lightening, pigmentation, acne, sunburns and hair loss with the amalgamation of herbal ingredients with recent techniques of transdermal drug delivery with nanotechnology.
Lacto-Check
Milk is considered to be the ‘ideal food’ because of its abundant nutrients required by both infants and adults. It is one of the best sources for protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin and minerals. Unfortunately, milk is being very easily adulterated throughout the world. Adulterants in milk mainly include addition of vegetable protein, milk from different species, addition of whey and watering which are known as economically motivated adulteration.
Some of the major adulterants in milk having serious adverse health effect are urea, formalin,
detergents, ammonium sulphate, boric acid, caustic soda, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sugars and melamine.
To overcome the problem of consumption of the adulterated milk we require testing its quality. Mrs. Pushpanjali Sharma, Department of Biosciences, AISMR has designed a single strip testing device “Lacto-check” a handy and easy to use product, for both industries and individual, which can check the adulterants (starch, urea, soap and acid) present in milk.
STUDENT INNOVATION
Sodium alginate and conductive polymer composites are at the forefront of many advanced applications due to their combined properties of biocompatibility, flexibility, and conductivity.
Sodium alginate, derived from brown seaweed, is a natural polymer known for its biocompatibility, gelling properties, and ability to form films.
Palak Vyas and Jhanvi Jain, students of B.Sc. Biotechnology I Yr, Department of Biosciences have prepared innovative sodium alginate conductive worms. These worms are particularly promising in the fields of bioelectronics, tissue engineering, soft robotics, and flexible energy storage devices. Their innovation won the first prize in intercollegiate Science Exhibition on Polymers, organized by Dept. of Biosciences on 28th Feb, 2023 to celebrate National Science Day
